The Big Idea

Wrong choices can cause deep pain. God sees suffering, and we should respond to others with compassion and care.

The Bible Story

Jesus Escapes to Egypt

Matthew 2:16–18 says Herod realized the visitors had not returned and ordered the killing of boys in Bethlehem and its surrounding region who were two years old or younger, based on the time he had learned from them. Matthew presents this as a cruel act and connects the resulting mourning with Jeremiah’s words. The passage gives the locations and age range but does not name individual children, families, or conversations. This account belongs within Matthew’s larger story: after the visitors departed, Joseph had been warned in a dream to take Jesus and Mary to Egypt because Herod was seeking the child. The family’s escape is not shown in this scene, and Jesus, Mary, and Joseph should not be pictured as present. The focus is the seriousness of injustice and the deep grief experienced by families in Bethlehem and its surrounding region.
