The Bible moment
Matthew 2:13–15 says that after the visitors depart, an angel of the Lord warns Joseph in a dream that Herod is seeking the child to destroy him. Joseph obeys: he takes Jesus and Mary and leaves for Egypt by night. They remain there until Herod dies. Matthew connects this stay with Scripture: “Out of Egypt I called my son.” The passage focuses on God’s warning, Joseph’s obedient response, and the protection of Jesus. It does not describe what the family does during their time in Egypt or how long the stay lasts beyond its ending at Herod’s death. The later verses explain that, after Herod dies, Joseph is told in another dream to return to Israel. He settles the family in Nazareth in Galilee. This page focuses only on the family’s safe stay in Egypt.
