The Bible Story

The Parable of the Rich Fool

In Luke 12:16, Jesus begins a parable about a rich man whose land produces an abundant harvest. Jesus had just warned people to guard against greed, explaining that life does not consist in having many possessions. The harvest itself is not presented as evil, and wealth is not condemned simply because it is wealth. The important question is how the man responds to abundance. He plans to tear down his barns, build larger ones, and store his grain and goods for himself. Later, God calls him a fool because his life will end unexpectedly, and his stored possessions cannot secure his life or go with him. Jesus concludes that storing up treasure for oneself while not being rich toward God misses what matters most. The passage teaches the limits of possessions and earthly plans, while pointing children toward gratitude, generosity, and valuing people over possessions.
