The Big Idea

Treasure cannot give life its deepest value. Thank God, care about people, and do not let possessions become more important than God.

The Bible Story

The Parable of the Rich Fool

In Luke 12:13–21, Jesus warns the crowd to guard against greed because life does not consist in the abundance of possessions. He tells about a rich man whose land produces an abundant harvest. The man plans to tear down his barns, build larger ones, store his grain and goods, and relax for many years. God calls him a fool because his life will be required that night, and his stored possessions cannot go with him. Jesus concludes that this is what happens to anyone who stores up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God. The passage does not say that wealth or possessions are automatically sinful. It warns against making self-centered accumulation the highest value and forgetting God’s place in life.
