The Bible Story

Jesus on the Road to Emmaus

Luke 24:13-14 says that, on the same day as the events just described, two disciples leave Jerusalem and travel about sixty stadia toward Emmaus while discussing what has happened. Luke names one traveler as Cleopas but does not name the other. This scene begins the account of Jesus on the road to Emmaus. Later in the passage, Jesus joins them, though they do not recognize him at first. He listens to their report about Jesus of Nazareth, the crucifixion, their hope for Israel’s redemption, and reports that the tomb was empty. Jesus then explains the Scriptures concerning the Messiah’s suffering and glory. Near Emmaus, he breaks bread, and they recognize him. The disciples return to Jerusalem and tell the gathered followers what happened.
