The Bible moment
Luke 24:28-30 describes part of the journey of two disciples traveling from Jerusalem to Emmaus. Jesus has walked with them and explained what Scripture says about the Messiah’s suffering and glory, though they have not recognized him. As they come near Emmaus, Jesus appears to be going farther. The disciples urge him to stay because evening is near, so he enters to remain with them. He takes bread, blesses it, breaks it, and gives it to them. The passage does not name the house or host, describe a larger meal, or explain the breaking of bread with an added ritual meaning. In the verses that follow, their eyes are opened, they recognize Jesus, and he disappears from their sight.
