Samson’s Family Buries Him

Judges 13:1–16:31

The Big Idea

Samson’s story is not a model for revenge. It reminds us to depend on God, take choices seriously, and remember that strength is not the same as wisdom.

The Bible Story

Samson and Delilah

Judges 16:23–31 closes the account of Samson. Philistine rulers and people gather in Dagon’s temple, celebrating what they believe their god has done. Samson is brought between the central pillars. He prays to the LORD to remember him and strengthen him once more, then pushes against the pillars. The temple collapses, killing Samson and many Philistines. His brothers and all his father’s household come down, take him, and bury him in the tomb of Manoah his father. The passage says Samson judged Israel for twenty years. This ending is solemn and tragic. Samson’s strength is connected with the LORD’s empowerment, not magic in his hair. His life also shows the consequences of impulsive and disobedient choices, along with prayer and dependence on God. The passage does not say that all Philistine oppression ended, and it does not explicitly call Samson’s final prayer repentance.
