1 Samuel 3:1-21

The Big Idea

We can listen respectfully to God’s word and be honest when we learn difficult truth.

The Bible Story

Samuel Hears God’s Call

In 1 Samuel 3:10-14, the LORD comes and stands, calls Samuel, and Samuel answers as Eli instructed: “Speak, LORD, for your servant hears.” The LORD then gives Samuel a serious message about judgment against Eli’s household because of known wrongdoing that Eli did not restrain. The passage does not describe the judgment in detail. Samuel is listening in the LORD’s temple, and the account does not specify the LORD’s visible form. This moment follows three calls that Samuel first misunderstood as Eli’s voice. Eli recognized that the LORD was calling Samuel and taught him how to respond. The passage presents Samuel as attentive and ready to hear, while also showing that God’s word can contain difficult truth. Later, Samuel tells Eli everything the LORD said, hiding nothing. The LORD remains with Samuel, and Israel recognizes him as a prophet of the LORD.
