The Bible Story

Samuel Hears God’s Call

Samuel served the LORD under Eli when messages from the LORD were rare and visions were uncommon. During the night, the LORD called Samuel several times, but Samuel first thought Eli was calling him. Eli understood what was happening and taught Samuel to answer, “Speak, LORD, for your servant hears.” The LORD then came and stood, and gave Samuel a serious message about judgment against Eli’s household. In the morning, Samuel opened the doors of the house of the LORD. He was afraid to tell Eli the vision, but when Eli asked, Samuel told him everything and hid nothing. This passage highlights Samuel’s attentive listening, respectful response, and faithful truth-telling. It also says that the LORD continued to be with Samuel, and all Israel recognized him as a prophet of the LORD.
