The Bible Story

Jesus Enters Jerusalem

Matthew 21:1–11 tells how Jesus approached Jerusalem from Bethphage at the Mount of Olives. He sent two disciples to bring a donkey and its colt from a nearby village. Matthew presents this as fulfilling the prophetic message that Jerusalem’s King would come humbly. The disciples obeyed Jesus, brought both animals, and placed their cloaks on them. Matthew’s wording says that Jesus sat on them, so the scene should not force a particular riding arrangement. The focus is Jesus’ humble royal arrival and the disciples’ obedience. Later, crowds spread cloaks and branches from trees on the road and praised Jesus as the Son of David. When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the city was stirred, and people asked who he was. The crowds answered that he was the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee.
