The Big Idea

Jesus is the humble King. We can welcome him with joy and remember that true greatness does not need showy luxury.

The Bible Story

Jesus Enters Jerusalem

Matthew 21:4-5 presents Jesus’ arrival as fulfilling the prophetic message that Jerusalem’s King comes humbly, seated on a donkey and a colt, the foal of a beast of burden. The message is spoken through the prophet and combines wording from Isaiah 62:11 and Zechariah 9:9. Matthew’s account includes both the donkey and its colt. The emphasis is not on royal luxury but on Jesus’ humble and peaceful arrival near Jerusalem. In the surrounding passage, Jesus directs two unnamed disciples to bring the animals. The disciples obey, place their cloaks on them, and Jesus sits on them. This scene belongs to Jesus’ approach to Jerusalem and should remain faithful to Matthew’s wording without adding a saddle or deciding on a different riding arrangement.
