The Bible Story

Jesus Turns Water into Wine

John 2:1–12 tells about a wedding at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples were invited. When the wine ran out, Jesus’ mother told him, “They have no wine.” The passage records her statement but does not explain her motive. Jesus responded that his hour had not yet come. His mother then told the servants to do whatever he said. Jesus later turned water into wine, performing his first sign at Cana. This sign manifested his glory, and his disciples believed in him. The passage presents a real need during a wedding and shows Jesus’ care and power. It does not name the couple or describe the wedding customs.
