The Bible Story

Jesus Turns Water into Wine

John 2:1–12 tells about a wedding at Cana in Galilee. Jesus, his mother, and his disciples are there. When the wine runs out, Jesus’ mother brings the need to him. Jesus says that his hour has not yet come, and she tells the servants to do whatever he says. Nearby are six large stone jars used for Jewish purification practices. Jesus tells the servants to fill them with water, and they fill them to the brim. Later, the passage says that Jesus turns the water into wine and calls this his first sign. The sign reveals his glory, and his disciples believe in him. This scene shows the servants obeying Jesus’ clear instruction before the transformation is described.
