The Bible moment
Matthew 2:1 introduces Magi from the east who arrive in Jerusalem during Herod’s reign. They ask where the child born king of the Jews can be found, explaining that they saw his star when it rose and came to worship him. The passage identifies Jesus as a child and places the Magi’s later visit in a house with Mary, his mother. It does not say how many Magi came, give their names, identify their exact homeland, or call them shepherds or three kings. Herod is the king in Jerusalem, and the chief priests and scribes later identify Bethlehem in Judea as the place where the Christ would be born. Matthew’s account continues with the Magi following the star, worshiping Jesus, presenting gold, frankincense, and myrrh, and returning home by another route after a warning in a dream.
