The Bible Story

Jesus Is Baptized

Matthew 3:13–17 tells how Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. John first objected, saying that he needed to be baptized by Jesus, but Jesus explained that it was fitting to fulfill all righteousness. John then permitted it. After Jesus came up from the water, the heavens opened, and the Spirit of God descended like a dove and came to rest on him. A voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” Matthew presents this as a peaceful declaration of God’s love and approval. The passage does not explain the precise Jordan location, the method of baptism, or what happened afterward.
