The Bible Story

Jesus Is Baptized

Matthew 3:13–17 tells how Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. John first tried to prevent him, saying that he needed to be baptized by Jesus instead. Jesus answered that it was fitting to fulfill all righteousness, and John permitted it. After Jesus was baptized, he immediately came up from the water. The heavens opened, and Jesus saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him. A voice from heaven declared, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” Matthew presents this as a peaceful moment involving Jesus, John, the opened heavens, the Spirit’s descent, and God’s declaration from heaven.
