The Bible Story

The Baby Moses

Exodus 1:8–2:10 tells how Moses was born when Pharaoh had ordered newborn Hebrew boys to be thrown into the Nile. His mother hid him for three months, then placed him in a papyrus basket coated with bitumen and pitch among the reeds. His sister watched nearby. Pharaoh’s daughter came to the Nile, saw the basket, and sent a servant to bring it to her. When she opened it, she saw the crying baby and recognized him as one of the Hebrews’ children. She felt compassion for him. Later, Moses’s sister helped arrange for a Hebrew woman to nurse him, and Pharaoh’s daughter took him as her son. She named him Moses because she drew him out of the water.
