The Bible Story

Crossing the Red Sea

Exodus 14:19-22 describes the LORD’s rescue of Israel at the Red Sea. The angel of God and the pillar of cloud move between the Israelites and the pursuing Egyptians. The cloud brings darkness to the Egyptians and light to Israel. Moses stretches out his hand, and the LORD drives back the sea with a strong east wind. The Israelites then cross on dry ground, with walls of water on both sides. The passage presents the LORD as the one who divides the sea and protects Israel, while Moses carries out the instructed action. This is part of the larger account in Exodus 14, where Pharaoh’s army pursues Israel and the people are afraid. The crossing shows the LORD’s power over the sea and his rescue of Israel. The scene should not be treated as an ordinary river crossing or explained by adding a different route or mechanical process.
