David Speaks from a Distance

1 Samuel 24:1-22

The Big Idea

When someone treats us wrongly, we can practice self-control, refuse revenge, speak truthfully, and leave judgment to the LORD.

The Bible Story

David Spares Saul

In 1 Samuel 24:1-22, Saul pursues David and enters a cave alone while David and his men hide inside. David’s men urge him to kill Saul, but David refuses to harm Saul because Saul is the LORD’s anointed. David cuts only the corner of Saul’s robe, then feels guilty and restrains his men. After Saul leaves the cave, David calls to him from a distance, bows, and shows the robe fragment. David truthfully says he has not rebelled or sought Saul’s harm. He asks the LORD to judge between them. Saul recognizes David’s righteousness, admits that David repaid evil with good, and asks David to promise not to destroy his descendants or wipe out his family name. David makes the promise, and they separate peacefully.
