The Bible moment
Judges 6:33–40 tells how the Midianites, Amalekites, and eastern peoples gathered in the Valley of Jezreel. The Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon, and he summoned forces. Gideon then asked the LORD for reassurance through a fleece. On the first night, dew covered the fleece while the ground stayed dry. On the second night, the fleece was dry while dew covered the ground. These signs belong to Gideon’s story as he sought reassurance; this passage does not present using a fleece as a required practice for everyone. The account continues with God reducing Gideon’s army so Israel would not claim victory because of its own strength.

Gideon kneels beside a fleece in an open field, with one side of the scene showing dew on the fleece and dry ground, and a second small inset showing the fleece dry while dew covers the ground. The distant Valley of Jezreel may contain gathered armies as small, non-threatening silhouettes.

Use this page to introduce Judges 6:33–40 or discuss Gideon’s fear, reassurance, and obedience. Remind children that the fleece was part of Gideon’s particular story, not a practice the Bible requires everyone to repeat. Invite children to notice the two different signs and connect this scene with the later lesson about trusting God rather than relying on numbers.
