The Bible Story

Jesus Feeds Five Thousand

Mark 6:30–44 tells how the disciples returned and reported to Jesus. Jesus invited them to rest in a solitary place, but many people arrived ahead of them. Seeing the crowd, Jesus had compassion on them and taught them. When it became late, Jesus told the disciples to give the people something to eat. They found five loaves and two fish. Jesus had everyone sit in groups on the green grass, then looked toward heaven, gave thanks, broke the loaves, and gave the food to the disciples to set before the people. He also divided the fish among them. Everyone ate and was satisfied. The disciples then collected twelve basketfuls of broken pieces and fish. Mark says about five thousand men had eaten the loaves; this does not state an exact total for everyone present.
