The Bible Story

Jesus Feeds Five Thousand

Mark 6:30–44 tells how the disciples returned and reported to Jesus. Jesus took them by boat to a solitary place to rest, but many people arrived ahead of them. Jesus had compassion on the crowd, taught them, and then addressed their need for food. When it grew late, Jesus told the disciples to give the people something to eat. Before the meal, Jesus instructed them to have everyone sit down in groups on the green grass. The people sat in groups of hundreds and fifties. Later, Jesus took five loaves and two fish, gave thanks while looking toward heaven, broke the loaves, and gave the food to the disciples to set before the people. Everyone ate and was satisfied. The disciples collected twelve basketfuls of broken pieces and fish. Mark says about five thousand men ate the loaves.
