The Bible Story

Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet

John 13:12–17 describes what happened after Jesus washed and dried the disciples’ feet. He asked whether they understood his action. Jesus affirmed that he is their Teacher and Lord, yet he had served them in a humble, practical way. He taught that they should wash one another’s feet and follow his example. A servant is not greater than the master. Jesus said they are blessed when they know these things and do them. This passage presents humble service as an obedient response to Jesus’ authority and example. It does not merely describe learning; it joins understanding with action. The basin, towel, and outer garments help children remember the concrete service Jesus performed. The surrounding passage also says that the disciples were clean, but not all, and briefly refers to one who would betray Jesus without identifying that person here.
