The Bible Story

Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet

John 13:6-9 records what happened when Jesus came to Simon Peter during the meal. Jesus was washing and drying the disciples’ feet. Peter was surprised and asked whether Jesus would wash his feet. Jesus told him that Peter did not understand then, though he would understand later. Peter initially refused. Jesus then said that unless he washed Peter, Peter had no share with him. Peter responded by asking for his hands and head as well. In this passage, Jesus is the Teacher and Lord who performs humble service. The moment also points to Jesus’ cleansing and to the importance of trusting him, even when his actions are not yet understood.
