The Bible Story

Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet

In John 13:12-17, Jesus puts on his outer garments after washing the disciples’ feet and asks whether they understand what he has done. He is their Teacher and Lord, yet he has served them in a humble, practical way. Jesus teaches that they should wash one another’s feet and follow his example. A servant is not greater than the master. He says they are blessed when they both know these things and do them. This teaching appears during the supper before the Passover feast. Jesus already knows that his hour has come and that one of those present will betray him, but the passage does not identify that person by name here. The focus of this lesson is Jesus’ authority joined with humble service. His example shows that leadership is not about seeking a higher place. It includes willingly helping others and obeying what he teaches. The passage also says that the disciples are clean, but not all of them. Keep this statement brief and respectful when teaching children.
