The Bible moment
John 13:4-5 describes Jesus rising from supper, laying aside his outer garments, tying a towel around himself, pouring water into a basin, and beginning to wash and dry the disciples’ feet. This action shows humble service. Jesus is their Teacher and Lord, yet he willingly performs a practical task for them. Later in the passage, Jesus teaches the disciples to wash one another’s feet and follow his example. He says they are blessed when they know these things and do them. John 13:1-20 also says Jesus knew his hour had come, knew that one of his own would betray him, and prepared his disciples to believe and receive those whom he sends. The passage ends by connecting receiving one Jesus sends with receiving Jesus and the One who sent him.
