The Bible Story

Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet

John 13:1-20 records what Jesus did before the Passover feast. During supper, Jesus rose, laid aside his outer garments, tied a towel around himself, poured water into a basin, and washed and dried the disciples’ feet. When Jesus came to Simon Peter, Peter asked whether Jesus would wash his feet. Jesus said Peter did not understand then but would understand later. Peter initially refused. Jesus explained that unless he washed Peter, Peter had no share with him. Peter then asked for his hands and head as well. Jesus said the disciples were clean, but not all of them, because he knew who would betray him. Afterward, Jesus, their Teacher and Lord, taught them to wash one another’s feet and follow his example of humble service. He said they are blessed when they know these things and do them. Jesus also prepared them to believe and taught that receiving one whom he sends is receiving him and the One who sent him.
