The Bible moment
Genesis 41:1–13 describes Pharaoh’s dreams after two full years have passed since Joseph interpreted the cupbearer’s dream. Pharaoh sees seven healthy cows followed by seven thin cows, and seven healthy ears of grain followed by seven thin, scorched ears. Egypt’s magicians and wise men cannot explain the dreams. Then the cupbearer remembers Joseph and tells Pharaoh about him. This passage introduces the dreams; Joseph’s interpretation comes afterward. Genesis 41:14–36 says Joseph gives God credit for the answer and explains that the dreams point to seven years of great abundance followed by seven years of severe famine. Joseph advises Pharaoh to collect one-fifth of the harvest during the abundant years and store it for the coming need.
