Martha Asks Jesus for Help

Luke 10:38-42

The Big Idea

Serving others matters, and listening to Jesus matters too. When many concerns compete for our attention, we can pause and choose what is most important.

The Bible Story

Jesus Visits Mary and Martha

Luke 10:38–42 tells how Jesus entered a village and Martha welcomed him into her home. Martha’s sister Mary sat at Jesus’ feet and listened to Jesus’ teaching. Martha was distracted by serving and asked Jesus whether he cared that Mary had left her to serve alone. She asked him to tell Mary to help her. Jesus addressed Martha by name and said that she was worried and troubled about many things, while one thing was necessary. He said Mary had chosen the good portion, which would not be taken away from her. This passage presents both sisters fairly: Martha is serving and offering hospitality, while Mary is listening attentively. Jesus’ answer addresses Martha’s worry and priorities in that moment; it does not condemn all practical service or make Martha a bad person.
