The Bible Story

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

Matthew 26:36–46 tells how Jesus came to Gethsemane with his disciples and went to pray. He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee farther with him and asked them to remain and watch. Jesus prayed to his Father about the cup, while submitting to the Father’s will. When he returned, he found the disciples sleeping. Jesus spoke to Peter and urged them to watch and pray so they would not enter temptation, explaining that the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. He prayed two more times, and the disciples slept again because their eyes were heavy. Jesus then told them to sleep and rest no longer, saying that the hour was near and his betrayer was approaching.
