The Bible Story

Stephen’s Faithful Witness

Acts 6:11–15 records that some men were secretly persuaded to accuse Stephen of speaking against Moses and God. The people, elders, and scribes were stirred up, and Stephen was brought before the council. False witnesses made further claims about the holy place, the law, Jesus, and Moses’ customs. These accusations are identified as false witnesses’ claims, not established facts. The high priest and the council heard the accusations. Before Stephen answered in Acts 7, everyone in the council saw that his face appeared like the face of an angel. This passage introduces Stephen’s appearance before the council without giving his later speech in this scene.
