The Bible Story

Stephen’s Faithful Witness

Acts 6:1–2 reports that, as the disciples increased, some Hellenist widows were not receiving their share in the daily distribution. The Twelve gathered the disciples and explained that they should not neglect prayer and the ministry of the word. This did not mean refusing practical care. The reported need was addressed within the Jerusalem church community. The passage presents a concern about fair distribution without stating that anyone intentionally caused the problem. Stephen is part of the wider account in Acts 6–7, where he is later recognized for faithful service and witness. For this scene, keep the focus on the reported need, the gathered disciples, and respectful care for widows.
