The Bible Story

Jesus Is Tempted in the Wilderness

Matthew 4:1–11 tells how the Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness, where Jesus fasted for forty days and forty nights and became hungry. The devil tempted Jesus three times: to command stones to become bread, to throw himself from the temple pinnacle, and to bow down in worship for the kingdoms of the world and their glory. Jesus refused each temptation and answered with words from Scripture. He chose to trust God, worship God alone, and not put God to the test. After these temptations, the devil left Jesus, and angels came to serve him. Matthew records this care without explaining how the angels served. This scene follows the testing and brings the account to a quiet close.
