The Big Idea

When difficult choices come, we can look to God’s Word and choose faithful obedience instead of giving in to temptation.

The Bible Story

Jesus Is Tempted in the Wilderness

Matthew 4:1-2 says that the Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. Jesus fasted for forty days and forty nights and became hungry. This scene introduces the testing that follows; it does not show Jesus turning stones into bread, standing at the temple, or viewing the world’s kingdoms. Matthew’s account continues with three temptations. Each time, Jesus answers with Scripture. He refuses to test God, chooses worship and service of the Lord God alone, and does not accept the devil’s offer. Afterward, the devil leaves Jesus, and angels come to serve him. The passage presents Jesus as trusting God and remaining obedient during a difficult time.

What children can notice

Jesus is alone in the wilderness after fasting for forty days and forty nights, with a simple setting and a thoughtful, steady posture. The Spirit’s leading may be suggested respectfully without depicting God the Father as a generic elderly man; the focus is Jesus’ hunger and preparation for testing.
