Jesus Stands Firm at the Temple

Matthew 4:1-11

The Big Idea

Jesus trusted God without needing to prove himself. We can stand firm when temptation invites us to make unwise choices.

The Bible Story

Jesus Is Tempted in the Wilderness

Matthew 4:5–7 describes the second temptation Jesus faced in the wilderness. The devil took Jesus to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple. He told Jesus to throw himself down and used words from Scripture about angels protecting him. Jesus answered with Scripture too: the Lord God must not be tested. Matthew presents this as a temptation Jesus refused. Jesus did not jump, and this scene does not show angels rescuing him. It shows Jesus trusting God without demanding a dramatic sign or misusing Scripture. This moment is part of a larger account in which Jesus fasted for forty days and forty nights, faced three temptations, and answered each one with words from Scripture. The Spirit had led Jesus into the wilderness, and the devil later left him. The passage teaches that Scripture should not be twisted to encourage disobedience or a test of God.
