Old Testament · Exodus 32:1-35
While Moses remains on Mount Sinai, the Israelites ask Aaron to make a visible god to lead them. Aaron forms a golden calf from their gold, and the people worship it with celebration. God tells Moses what is happening and announces judgment. Moses intercedes, comes down carrying the two tablets of the covenant, breaks them when he sees the calf and the dancing, destroys the calf, confronts Aaron and the people, and calls for those loyal to the LORD. A plague follows the people’s sin, and Moses again appeals to God on Israel’s behalf.
