Moses Questions Aaron

Exodus 32:1-35

The Big Idea

Blaming pressure or circumstances does not erase our responsibility for sinful choices. We can be honest, repent, and turn back to faithful worship.

The Bible Story

The Golden Calf

Exodus 32:21–24 describes Moses confronting Aaron after Moses saw the golden calf and the people celebrating around it. Moses asks what the people did that led Aaron to bring such a great sin upon them. Aaron explains that the people pressured him, gave him their gold, and that the calf came out of the fire. This is Aaron’s explanation, not a correction of the earlier account. The chapter has already stated that Aaron received the gold, formed the calf with a tool, built an altar before it, and announced a feast. The Israelites worshiped the calf instead of faithfully worshiping the LORD. The passage therefore presents both the people’s pressure and Aaron’s responsibility. The golden calf represented serious misplaced worship and covenant disobedience. Moses’ question calls attention to the seriousness of what happened and to the need for accountability.
