A Feast Before the Calf

Exodus 32:1-35

The Big Idea

God calls his people to faithful worship. This scene reminds us that turning to a created thing instead of the LORD is serious.

The Bible Story

The Golden Calf

Exodus 32:5–6 records what happened after Aaron made the golden calf. Aaron built an altar before it and announced a feast to the LORD. The Israelites rose early the next day and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. They then sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play. The offerings and feast took place in the setting of Israel’s misplaced worship of the calf. This was covenant disobedience: the people had turned from worshiping the LORD as commanded and had gathered around an image instead. The passage does not describe particular games or explain exactly what “play” involved, so those details should not be added. The scene prepares readers for Moses’ response when he comes down from Mount Sinai and sees the calf and the celebration.
