Exodus 32:1-35

The Big Idea

Waiting can feel difficult, but impatience should not lead us away from faithful worship or trust in God.

The Bible Story

The Golden Calf

Exodus 32:1 begins the account of the golden calf. The Israelites see that Moses has delayed coming down from Mount Sinai, so they gather around Aaron. They say they do not know what has happened to Moses and ask Aaron to make gods to go before them. This request reveals impatience and a desire for a visible replacement for faithful worship. The passage does not say that Moses has died. Later in the chapter, Aaron receives gold from the people and makes a golden calf, and the people worship it. God takes their covenant disobedience seriously. Moses prays for the people, and the chapter also shows accountability, judgment, and mercy. This first scene focuses only on the people’s request while they wait.
