The Bible Story

Crossing the Red Sea

Exodus 14:23–25 describes the Egyptians pursuing Israel into the sea. Pharaoh’s horses, chariots, and horsemen enter the path after the Israelites have crossed on dry ground between walls of water. During the morning watch, the LORD looks down from the pillar of fire and cloud, throws the Egyptian forces into confusion, and clogs their chariot wheels. The Egyptians recognize that the LORD is fighting for Israel. This moment shows the pursuit being stopped and the LORD’s power over the sea. The passage continues by telling how the waters return when Moses stretches out his hand, covering the pursuing Egyptians and their equipment, while Israel remains safe on dry ground.
