The Bible Story

Jacob Wrestles at Peniel

Genesis 32:22–32 tells how Jacob crossed the Jabbok with his family and possessions. After they had crossed, Jacob was left alone. While he was alone, a man wrestled with him until daybreak. The passage later says that the man touched Jacob’s hip, leaving it out of joint. Jacob asked for a blessing and received the name Israel because he had striven with God and with humans and had prevailed. Jacob named the place Peniel, saying that he had seen God face to face and lived. When the sun rose, Jacob was limping because of his hip. This page focuses on the quiet moment before the struggle, using Genesis 32:24 without adding details that the verse does not state.
