The Bible Story

Jacob Wrestles at Peniel

Genesis 32:29-30 tells how Jacob asks the man’s name. The man responds by asking why Jacob asks and blesses him there. Jacob then names the place Peniel, saying that he has seen God face to face and yet his life has been spared. This statement comes after the nightlong struggle in which Jacob asked for a blessing and received the name Israel. The account calls Jacob’s opponent a man, while Jacob describes his experience in relation to God. The passage does not provide a visual description of God, so this scene should leave that mystery unpictured. The nearby place name helps children connect Jacob’s words with the location he named. The wider account also says that Jacob later limped because of his hip, but this beat focuses on the naming of Peniel and Jacob’s understanding of what happened there.
