The Bible Story

Jacob Wrestles at Peniel

Genesis 32:22–32 tells how Jacob crossed the Jabbok with his family and possessions, then was left alone. A man wrestled with Jacob until daybreak and touched Jacob’s hip, leaving it out of joint. Jacob asked for a blessing and received the name Israel, because he had striven with God and with humans and had prevailed. Jacob named the place Peniel, saying that he had seen God face to face and yet his life had been spared. As the sun rose, Jacob passed Penuel limping because of his hip. The passage closes by noting the Israelites’ practice concerning the tendon attached to the hip socket.
