The People Turn Back

Numbers 13:1–14:45

The Big Idea

Trusting God means following his direction, not just trying harder with our own plan. Ask God for courage to obey him.

The Bible Story

Joshua and Caleb Trust God

Numbers 14:39–45 describes what happened after the people heard the LORD’s judgment. They mourned and decided to go toward the place the LORD had promised, but Moses warned them that the LORD was not with them in this attempt. They went up toward the hill country anyway. Moses and the ark of the covenant stayed in the camp. The Amalekites and Canaanites came down and defeated the Israelites, driving them back as far as Hormah. This was different from the earlier mission of the twelve spies. The people were not following the LORD’s direction; they were trying to enter after refusing to trust him. The passage presents their defeat without describing individual combat. It teaches that courage is not simply going ahead with our own plan. True obedience means listening to the LORD and following his direction.

What children can notice

The Israelite community approaches the hill country after deciding to go up without the LORD’s support. Moses and the ark of the covenant remain behind in the camp, while the people’s defeated return is shown through weary, empty-handed travelers and a distant retreating path rather than combat.
