The Bible moment
Exodus 20:18–21 describes the people of Israel seeing thunder, lightning, the trumpet sound, and the smoking mountain. They stand far away and ask Moses to speak with them because they fear that direct speech from God may bring death. Moses tells them not to be afraid. He explains that God is showing his power so that reverence for him will help keep them from sin. The people remain at a distance while Moses approaches the thick darkness where God is present. This moment follows God’s speaking of the Ten Commandments in Exodus 20:1–17. The surrounding account in Exodus 19 explains that Mount Sinai had a boundary and that the people were to treat the mountain as holy. The passage presents the mountain’s smoke, cloud, thunder, lightning, and trumpet sound as powerful signs of God’s presence. It does not describe Moses entering or revealing what is beyond the darkness in this selected scene.
