John 2:1-12

The Big Idea

Jesus continued traveling with people close to him and with his disciples. The Bible tells us where they went, even when it does not tell us everything that happened there.

The Bible Story

Jesus Turns Water into Wine

John 2:12 says that after Jesus’ first sign at Cana, he went down to Capernaum with his mother, his brothers, and his disciples. They remained there a few days. This verse gives the people traveling with Jesus and names Capernaum as their destination. It does not describe the journey, explain where they stopped, or tell what happened during those days. The passage belongs to the account of Jesus turning water into wine at a wedding in Cana. That sign manifested Jesus’ glory, and his disciples believed in him. For this scene, the important ending is the stated departure to Capernaum. Jesus’ mother and brothers are named as part of the group, while the passage does not name the brothers or identify the disciples individually.
