The Bible Story

Jesus Turns Water into Wine

John 2:1–12 tells about a wedding at Cana in Galilee. Jesus and his disciples were invited, and Jesus’ mother was there. When the wine ran out, she told Jesus, “They have no wine.” Jesus responded that his hour had not yet come. Then his mother told the servants to do whatever he said. The passage next records that Jesus directed the servants concerning six stone water jars used for Jewish purification. They obeyed him, and Jesus performed his first sign by turning water into wine. This sign revealed his glory, and his disciples believed in him. The account does not name Jesus’ mother, the bridegroom, the master of the feast, or the disciples. It also does not explain the mother’s intentions beyond her recorded words or describe the process of the sign.
