The Bible Story

Jesus Turns Water into Wine

John 2:6 says that six stone water jars were nearby at the wedding in Cana. They were used for Jewish purification, and each held two or three measures; the passage does not give a modern exact volume. Jesus later told the servants to fill these jars with water, and they filled them to the brim. He then told them to draw some out and take it to the master of the feast. The passage does not describe how the water became wine or say exactly when this happened. The master tasted the resulting wine without knowing its source, while the servants knew. This event became Jesus’ first sign in Cana. John says that through this sign Jesus revealed his glory, and his disciples believed in him. The jars help children notice that Jesus worked through ordinary things and that the servants took part by obeying his instructions. The passage places this sign within a wedding celebration and presents wine as part of that setting; it does not encourage children to drink.
