The Bible Story

Jesus Turns Water into Wine

John 2:1–12 tells about a wedding at Cana in Galilee. When the wine runs out, Jesus’ mother brings the need to him. Jesus tells the servants to fill six stone jars with water, and they fill them to the brim. He then tells them to draw some out and take it to the master of the feast. The water has become wine, though the passage does not describe how or when the change occurred. This is Jesus’ first sign at Cana. John says that the sign manifested Jesus’ glory, and his disciples believed in him. The jars were used for Jewish purification, giving helpful cultural context for older children. The account presents wine as part of the wedding setting; the focus is Jesus’ sign, his care in a real human need, and the disciples’ growing belief.
