The Bible Story

Jesus Escapes to Egypt

Matthew 2:19–20 says that after Herod dies, an angel of the Lord appears to Joseph in a dream while the family is in Egypt. The angel tells Joseph to take Jesus and Mary and go to Israel because those seeking the child’s life are dead. This message follows the earlier warning that led Joseph to take his family to Egypt. The passage presents the return as guided protection and as a response to God’s direction through a dream. It does not list separate plotters or describe Herod’s death visually. The next verses explain that Joseph takes the family to Israel, then settles in Galilee and Nazareth after receiving further guidance. This page focuses only on the return warning in Matthew 2:19–20.
